Iceland
Iceland Traverse
On a grey day in August, 2012 I hired a bread truck driver to take me along a lonely dirt road in northern Iceland, as I attempted to get as close to the northernmost point of the island as possible. Once we reach the end of the road, I trekked on, over mossy growth toward a crimson-tipped lighthouse. My excitement vanished abruptly as the cries of a flock of angry birds rose above the soothing ocean waves. Moments later, arctic tern began to dive bomb as I made a mad dash toward the ocean ahead. I made it to the shore, caught my breath, and checked my maps. I looked out over the Greenland Sea and tossed a stone across the Arctic Circle. Then, I picked up my pack and began walking south across the Icelandic Highlands toward the southernmost tip of the island, where I hopped to arrive in 19 days.
